The Shanti Uganda Society is looking for a place to call home

***Just UPDATED this post!!-Check out Shanti's new website!

The Shanti Uganda Society is looking or a place to call home in Vancouver and would love any contacts or suggestions you might have. They hope to find a small space within an existing business that has a little extra to spare. Enough room to fit 2 desks, a tall storage unit, a filing cabinet and 5-6 large rubbermaid bins. Desk rental, or small cubicle unfortunately won't for them.

Preferably in East Van, but able to go as far west as kits and as far east as boundary.

They hope to be able to find donated space and could support the business in writing it off, or giving a tax receipt for the rental. They say they are happy to discuss a partnership that benefits them with regards to promotion on our website etc.

It is an amazing opportunity for a local business to have a substantial impact on a Canadian Charity and mothers in Uganda without making a financial contribution. If you know of anything please contact them at natalie@shantiuganda.org

And don't forget their Facebook Page  and Twitter Page

Ever have a day just go completely sideways on ya?

Oh yesterday was that sort of day for me. Sigh..
Thankfully today is a new day.

My biggest disappointment yesterday when my afternoon went horribly wrong was not being able to go to a Shanti Uganda Society event I had been looking forward to for weeks and weeks. I got my hair done, picked up the clothes from the cleaners (not a fan of dry cleaners ) when sadly life threw me a curve ball and attending became impossible. Other than having a big fat cry and trying to remedy a situation in which I had absolutely no control I thought...

How do I make something good out of something bad?

And I I purchased a Fence Post. *See Post For Peace to find out all about what the fence project is about.

There are so many ways to support this marvelous organization, and like Rumi said: There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground

For all other happenings/upcoming events and ways YOU can make a difference click here, and be sure to get on their mailing list. Get ready to be blown away!

How would you like to be walking down the street and bang, outta the blue...

Someone rides up on their bike and hands you a gift? And it's a beautiful piece of art? Sounds like a dream to me! A really amazing dream!

what is Papergirl?

Papergirl is an art project from Berlin. In the style of American paper-boys, rolled art pieces will be distributed by bicycle in the streets of Vancouver to random passers-by.

Art should be accessible to everyone. That is the spirit behind Papergirl, the pedal-powered and volunteer ridden project that combines art, philanthropy, and bikes!

A redefinition of street art, Papergirls volunteer cyclists criss cross the city delivering art directly into the hands of perfect strangers. From August 22 to 27 the Roundhouse Community Center will display an assortment of donated artworks before the art is bundled up and given away on the street. It’s the art of giving away art.

Like the Facebook page here and tell your artist friends! Send in your submissions! More info can be found at the Roundhouse website here

The official Papergirl links are PapergirlBerlin and PapergirlUSA !

Can't wait :)

You can never have too much art or culture or generosity or just plain coolness in a city in my opinion! Tell your friends and spread the love, and the art!

Defining moments in life

You may have seen this, or other clips of this rare hero's work circulating around the internet, Facebook and CNN. His name is Narayan Krishnan. He has been at this for a quite a while now (since 2002), and has fed, cared for, and freely given of himself to the needy in his community every single day since then..

He was 20 years old with everything going for him. He had even passed up a lucrative job in Switzerland as a chef when he had an experience that he calls his "defining moment"..

As he puts it:
In June 2002, Krishnan witnessed his life-changing event -

He saw an old man suffering from acute hunger and eating his own human waste.

As the old man ate the food given to him, he held Krishnan's hand, giving the very real sensation of a powerful energy. This triggered an experience of inner happiness and fulfillment Krishnan had never felt before.

Since then he has worked tirelessly and without a break, serving 1.5 million meals to the hungry, destitute, uncared for, mentally ill, elderly, sick, and helpless folks in his community. And not only food, but love. Clothing. Hair cuts and shaves. And dignity.

Anyways, his videos are out in full force again this holiday season as they always are this time of year.
This man is a true hero if ever there was one. One line he says that gets me everytime is;
"Just give". "Feel the joy of giving"..it's so simple and yet so true.

Should you want to learn more about what this incredible man and his team do or wish to donate his website is http://www.akshayatrust.org/
Namaste.

This is amazing. This is really and TRULY amazing!

Have you ever heard of a "pop up shop" that donates 100% of it's net profits to wonderful local charities? (And has beautiful and amazing merchandise from local businesses that you would totally buy?)

I stopped by Capers in Kit's today for lunch and while on the patio sadly noticed that Duthies Books had closed down. :(

I looked a little closer and saw that a 'pop up shop' was going to be temporarily taking over the space. I looked in the window and saw beautiful household furnishings, art, clothes...all sorts of things.

I went inside and was told the place wasn't opening until June 2 but that all of the profits were going to two wonderful children's charities that I happen to love!

This is hard to believe but it's completely cool and legit!
What a wonderful concept!

The place will only be open for 4-6 weeks so I suggest getting down very soon!

I may do my Holiday shopping early this year just to be able to partake!

The exact location is 2239 W 4th Ave right next to Capers (where Duthie's Books used to be) 4th Avenue, just E of Vine.

Make sure you check it out. I'll be seeing you there!
